Cervical Screening Awareness Week

Cervical Screening Awareness Week

It’s Cervical Screening Awareness Week!

Almost 1 in 3 women don’t go for cervical screening and most women are not aware of the symptoms of cervical cancer. Cervical screening is essential to preventing cervical cancer and detecting early signs of abnormal cervical cell changes.

Facts about the cervix:

  • The cervix can change shape and position.
  • It makes its own type of mucus.
  • The cervix is plugged during pregnancy.
  • Approx. half the length of the cervix is visible with appropriate medical equipment E.g. during a cervical screening using a speculum.

If you notice unusual bleeding, pain or mucus, then book an appointment with your GP to get it checked out. To find out more about the symptoms of cervical cancer and the support available after the screening, visit Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust
