World MS Day
World MS Day
It is World MS Day! This day is celebrated on 30th May each year to raise awareness and campaign with everyone affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). The theme for World MS Day 2020-2023 is ‘Connections’. This campaign is focused on building community connection, self-connection and connections to quality care.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It is an inflammatory demyelinating condition caused by damage to myelin – a fatty material that insulates nerves. The loss of myelin affects the way nerves conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain.
Common symptoms can include blurred vision, weak limbs, tingling sensations, unsteadiness, memory problems, and fatigue.
Facts about MS:
- Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40.
- MS is 2-3 times more common in women than in men.
- There is no cure for MS, but treatments are available to help modify the
course of the disease
